India is preparing to sharply reduce its imports of russian crude oil following new sanctions by the united states targeting rosneft and lukoil.
The move signals a major shift in India’s energy strategy and could ease trade tensions with Washington, which recently imposed 50% tariffs on indian exports due to its heavy reliance on russian oil.
Reliance Industries, India’s largest private refiner, plans to scale down purchases in line with government directives, while state-owned refiners such as indian oil corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum are reviewing supply contracts to ensure compliance.
The sanctions, announced by president donald trump, give companies until november twenty-first to cease transactions with russian producers.
India, which currently imports about 1.7 million barrels of russian crude daily, may turn to suppliers from the middle east and brazil to fill the gap.
Analysts believe the policy shift will reshape India’s energy security and test its diplomatic balance between Moscow and Washington as trade negotiations continue.
