India has been officially confirmed as the host of the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, defeating Nigeria’s Abuja after a tightly contested bid process. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport, which selected the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat as the host.
The decision will be formally ratified during the organisation’s general assembly in Glasgow on November 26. This marks the second time India will stage the Games, following Delhi’s successful hosting in 2010. Ahmedabad’s bid stood out for its modern infrastructure and readiness to host large-scale sporting events. Central to its proposal is the 132,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium — the largest in the world — which hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final.
With a population exceeding five million and growing international sporting ambitions, Ahmedabad is being seen as a rising global sports hub. Nigeria’s Abuja, though praised for its enthusiasm, fell short on infrastructure readiness and funding assurances, giving India the decisive edge in the final vote.
