The Lagos State Government has announced that construction of the $3 billion Green Line Rail project, linking Marina to the Lekki corridor, will commence in December 2025. Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, confirmed this in a statement on Monday, describing the initiative as one of the state’s most ambitious transport projects to date. The 70-kilometre line, which will be developed in phases over two to three years, will run from Marina through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, Sangotedo, and Epe, with 17 stations and a projected capacity of 35,000 passengers per hour.
The project, led by the China Harbour Engineering Company under a public-private partnership, is designed to ease congestion along the Lekki-Epe corridor and support the state’s long-term rail mass transit network. The Federal Government has also committed ₦146.14 billion as counterpart funding in the 2025 budget. Authorities have begun clearing encroachments and relocating traders in preparation for construction, while the government promises minimal disruption and adequate compensation for affected residents. According to Osiyemi, the Green Line will “improve quality of life, attract investments, and create jobs,” marking another step toward Lagos’s integrated multi-modal transport vision.
