The Abia state government has commissioned a modern materials testing laboratory in umuahia to enhance quality control and ensure safer delivery of construction and engineering works across the state. The initiative, announced by the commissioner for information, okey kanu, is part of governor Alex otti’s wider reforms to improve infrastructure standards and reduce risks of building collapse.
The facility, located within the Umuahia capital development authority complex, is equipped to test soil, concrete, aggregate, steel reinforcement, asphalt pavement, and other key construction inputs. According to the state government, these tests will help detect substandard materials, promote durability, and boost investor and public confidence in infrastructure projects.

Alongside the laboratory, the government is rolling out wider development measures, including the revitalization of abia hotels, the launch of tech rise ict training for 850 young people, construction of new prototype markets in local councils, and the activation of 25 primary healthcare centers. These combined efforts underline the state’s commitment to safer infrastructure, youth empowerment, and inclusive economic growth.
