Nigeria will select its next space representative through a new democratic astronaut selection process launched on Wednesday by the Space Exploration Research Agency (SERA). The initiative, which also includes India, Indonesia, Brazil, and Thailand, aims to make space exploration more inclusive by allowing citizens to choose their representatives through a blockchain-powered voting platform.
Unlike traditional astronaut programs that often require military training or advanced technical degrees, the SERA model is designed to open participation to the wider public. Through its Mission Control platform hosted on Telegram, Nigerians will be able to nominate candidates, follow campaigns, and cast votes, making the process transparent and community-driven.
Organizers say the program represents a shift from elite, institution-based selection to a people-centered approach, giving ordinary citizens a direct voice in shaping their country’s presence in space. The move is expected to inspire greater interest in science and technology while reinforcing Nigeria’s role in global space exploration efforts.
