President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an upgraded retirement benefits package for military service chiefs and senior officers, offering them luxurious perks, including bulletproof vehicles, personal aides, and substantial medical allowances.
The benefits are outlined in the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service (HTCOS), signed on December 14, 2024.
Under the new policy, retiring service chiefs, including the Chief of Defence Staff and heads of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, will receive a bulletproof SUV and a backup vehicle, both replaced every four years.

Other benefits include five domestic aides—two cooks, two stewards, and a gardener—alongside a security officer or aide-de-camp. Retirees will also retain their military uniforms for ceremonial purposes.
For lieutenant generals and their equivalents, the package includes two Toyota Hilux vehicles or a Toyota Land Cruiser, $20,000 annually for medical treatment, and a team of domestic staff comprising two cooks, two stewards, and four residential guards.
Major generals and brigadier generals will receive Toyota Land Cruisers or Camry vehicles, annual medical allowances ranging from $10,000 to $15,000, and similar domestic support staff. Colonels and their equivalents are entitled to Toyota Corollas and free medical care within Nigeria.
The updated HTCOS reflects an upward review of the benefits, aligning with the country’s current socio-economic conditions.
While rewarding retired officers is a longstanding tradition, the enhanced packages signify the government’s recognition of their years of service.
These benefits will be maintained by the Armed Forces, ensuring a comfortable retirement for senior officers who have served the nation for 35 years or more.
