Xi Jinping Calls For US-China Ties Amid Trump Transition

Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged to work with incoming United States President Donald Trump to stabilize relations between the two global powers. The announcement came during a meeting with outgoing US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, Peru.

In a strong statement, President Xi emphasized that “a new Cold War should not be fought and cannot be won,” warning that attempts to contain China would fail. Xi described a stable US-China relationship as essential for both nations and the world.

During Biden’s term, progress was made on trade and climate agreements, but relations were strained by incidents such as the Taiwan crisis and the “spy balloon” controversy.

President Xi highlighted the dangers of treating the US-China relationship as adversarial. He called for cooperation, dialogue, and conflict management, stating, “If the US and China treat each other as opponents or enemies, relations will regress.”
Biden, for his part, echoed the sentiment, urging that competition between the two nations must not escalate into conflict. He described the relationship as one where rivalry has been “responsibly managed” despite challenges.

However, Trump’s return to the presidency raises concerns for Beijing. His first term saw relations deteriorate, marked by a trade war, heightened tariffs, and controversial rhetoric. Trump has promised to impose a 60% tariff on Chinese imports, raising the stakes for the bilateral relationship.

Analysts predict more volatility, with China preparing for potential confrontation while signalling a willingness to engage. “The Chinese are ready to negotiate but will retaliate, if necessary,” said Bonnie Glaser, an expert on Indo-Pacific relations.

Biden acknowledged disagreements with Xi but described their discussions as “frank” and “candid.” Over his term, Biden upheld Trump-era tariffs and strengthened alliances in Asia to counter China’s regional influence.
