President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called for unity and healing following a deadly attack in Magdeburg, Germany, which left five people dead and over 200 injured. The tragedy occurred when a car ploughed through a Christmas market crowd, spreading horror and grief just days before the festive holiday.
“A dark shadow hangs over this Christmas,” said Steinmeier, reflecting on the pain and shock caused by the attack. He emphasized the importance of standing together, saying, “Hatred and violence must not have the final word. Let us not allow ourselves to be driven apart.”

Authorities identified the attacker as Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor. He drove a rented car into the crowd, killing a nine-year-old boy and four women aged 45 to 75. His motive remains unclear, though investigators discovered online posts expressing anti-Islam views and far-right conspiracy beliefs.

Abdulmohsen had a history of mental illness and was arrested at the scene. Saudi Arabia claims it had previously warned Germany about him, raising questions about potential security lapses. Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government has promised a thorough investigation.
Steinmeier offered condolences to the victims’ families, saying, “You are not alone in your pain. The entire country mourns with you.”
