NDPC Partner Banks To Boost Data Security

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has forged a partnership with banks to enhance data protection and security across the country. This collaboration is aimed at safeguarding sensitive information and ensuring compliance with the Data Protection Act, especially as banks hold the personal data of over two-thirds of Nigerians. Given that banks constitute a small portion of Nigeria’s 500,000 data processors but manage a considerable amount of personal data, they play a crucial role in national data security.

The KPMG West Africa Banking Industry Customer Experience Survey 2023 highlighted that data security, integrity, and privacy significantly influence customer trust. Consequently, the partnership between NDPC and banks is pivotal in addressing these concerns and strengthening customer confidence.

During a recent visit to NDPC headquarters, Rasheed Bolarinwa, President of the Association of Corporate & Marketing Communication Professionals of Banks (ACAMB), emphasized the significance of closer collaboration between financial institutions and NDPC to enhance regulatory oversight and ensure customers’ data protection.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, NDPC’s National Commissioner, expressed his approval of the partnership and reiterated the Commission’s focus on promoting compliance rather than punishing violations. This approach aims to create a culture of proactive adherence to data protection regulations.

Industry analysts are optimistic about the potential impact of this alliance, believing that it will bolster data privacy in Nigeria’s financial sector. By working together, NDPC and banks can establish robust mechanisms for data protection and security, thereby instilling greater confidence among customers and stakeholders.

This partnership signifies a proactive step towards addressing data protection challenges, underscoring the commitment of both NDPC and banks to prioritize the security and privacy of individuals’ data. As the collaboration unfolds, it is expected to yield positive outcomes in terms of enhanced data protection measures and improved customer trust within the financial sector.
