British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has disclosed that trade between Nigeria and the United Kingdom has reached a record £7.9 billion (₦16 trillion). He described the figure as unprecedented in the history of bilateral commerce between both countries.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Montgomery explained that the UK-Nigeria economic relationship is now being strengthened under post-Brexit trade rules. According to him, Britain’s exit from the European Union has given Nigeria greater access and flexibility, making it one of the biggest beneficiaries of the new arrangement. He noted that reduced barriers and enhanced market opportunities are already driving growth in trade and investment flows.
The envoy highlighted energy, manufacturing, agriculture, and services as sectors where British companies are expanding partnerships in Nigeria. He further emphasized that the UK is also committed to long-term cooperation in infrastructure, renewable energy, digital innovation, and education. Montgomery stressed that these areas will not only deepen bilateral relations but also create mutual economic benefits for both nations.
