Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar reaffirmed the shared historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Niger, which are underscored by trade and economic interdependence, saying the connections are reminders of intrinsically linked destinies.

“Unfounded allegations raise needless tensions that could cause disaffection and threaten the collective progress of our region. We reaffirm our respect for Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in alignment with ECOWAS principles”, he said.

Tuggar also called for open and constructive dialogue between governments of both countries, saying “we are prepared to explore confidence-building measures, such as collective support, to alleviate the humanitarian impact on our border communities. We call upon regional and international partners to support efforts aimed at fostering reconciliation and stability, rather than deepening divisions”.

Recall that Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali have agreed to exit the ECOWAS bloc by January 29, 2025.
